I love this recipe.  It might be a new obsession.  Think a healthier version of brownie batter you can eat, and spread on everything.  Is it exactly the same as dipping your finger in the brownie batter bowl?  Well, no of course not. But it’s not the flavor that’s off as much as the texture.  But this here recipe is definitely a new go-to.  If you’re going all in on the s’mores theme, then load up some graham crackers and get to nomming!  But for those who want to be more health conscious, a great alternative is to dip with fruit and get all that chocolatey deliciousness you crave without added guilt.

 Blending Chickpeas for S'mores Chocolate Hummus @ bestwithchocolate.com

It really does taste like chocolatey-goodness and the flavor of chickpeas is very much overpowered by the chocolate.  The key in my opinion of making this decadent treat while on weight watchers is to put a little bit of full-fat favorites into the dip.  Whether that means chopping up some graham crackers (2 points for 2 squares) or loading up on the marshmallows (1 point for 10 mini marshmallows) or adding a chopped oreo (2 points for one oreo) you can have your cake and eat it too.  Just make sure you’re portioning out an appropriate serving size, because you’ll want to gobble up this whole thing!

To keep the weight watchers freestyle points on this recipe low and also to prevent sogginess, I like to sprinkle on the toppings when I sit down to actually eat it.  Here are my calculations for points on this recipe:

  • Base recipe (8 for entire recipe, 2 per serving):
    chickpeas – 0 points
    almond milk – 0-1 points
    honey/agave – 2-3 points
    cocoa powder – 4 points
  • Toppings:
    10 mini marshmallows – 1 point
    2 squares graham crackers – 2 points
  • Total: 5 points when paired with fruit for a delicious chocolatey splurge!  And that’s assuming the worst in all the above points (e.g. 1c. almond milk is often 1 point, and you only need 1/2 c.).  I do prefer to overestimate rather than underestimate though and it still comes out to 5 points!  Optionally you can add 1 chopped oreo for +2 points, which would bring your total to 7 points.

Even though it was a weight watchers minded recipe, this is one I’ll tuck away for parties as a healthy, easy, and make-ahead recipe!  Keep an eye out for future different flavors too…I’m thinking maybe a chocolate peanut-butter version and a mint oreo version!

Ingredients

Chocolate Hummus

  • 14 oz canned chickpeas drained
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder for sweetness, use Dutch-processed cocoa
  • 4 tsp honey or agave
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup unsweetened almond milk

S’mores Toppings (per serving)

  • 4 squares graham crackers
  • 10 mini marshmallows

Instructions

  • Drain and rinse canned chickpeas. If you desire a smoother texture you can remove the skins from each chickpea.
  • In a blender or food processer, add the chickpeas and milk. Begin blending.
  • Add other ingredients and blend together until smooth. Add more milk as needed to get desired consistency.
  • Sprinkle marshmallows on top and serve with graham crackers to dip. Alternatively, crumble graham crackers on top and serve with fresh fruit.
