brunch review: fuego cocina y tequileria;

Note: Permanently closed, as of October 16, 2016

So this Sunday I finally got to try brunch at what I lovingly have dubbed “el fuegos” since Fuego Cocina y Tequileria is a bit of a mouthful. Especially after two margaritas and the tipsy has kicked in. And you might be scoffing at me–hah, two margaritas!–but let me tell you, their frozen margaritas (henceforth margs) typically have three shots of tequila in them and couple that with the salt and the amazing taste, and you’ve got yourself a tipsy brunch.  We started off with a round of apps: queso fondido, guacamole, quesadilla de jaiba (crab quesadilla), tacos, and they always bring you fresh–usually warm!–chips.  These apps are the same size appetizers you would typically order on their menu, and although I got the queso this time, J got my usual quesadilla de jaiba, and we ended up splitting halfsies!

My entree was the huevos rancheros because what better to get at my go-to place than my go-to meal!  It was amazing.  I honestly didn’t even eat a whole one because I was so stuffed from the appetizers, but it was delicious.  And actually heated up surprisingly well.

I highly recommend going on Sundays. They have their three course $19 brunch as well as all day happy hour!  Their brunch features $2 drinks like the classic margarita, mimosas, etc. or you can opt for half off their signature drinks (aka the frozen marg, my go-to.)  For frozen margaritas they have the traditional lime, a hibiscus flavor, and an option of “twisted” or swirled of lime + hibiscus.  J and K of our party went with the carnitas hash.  Can’t go wrong there!  Crispy potatoes with carnitas pork, topped with a poached egg.  It was classy, and yet still a hearty brunch with just enough grease to compliment the margs.

Fuegos has been a solid go-to for me since I moved to the area–jeez, 3 years ago!  And somehow I hadn’t tried brunch until this past weekend!  Silly me. A friend, K from college came down from Baltimore since I had been telling her about this place forever and we lived it up!  T got his classic chicken enchiladas.  Their 3-course brunch entrée portions are smaller than their dinner entrée portions, thank goodness!  Otherwise you’d have had to roll me out.

For desserts, T, K, and J got the churros which were nice and crispy, and again, a good size for dessert!  Z got the fresh berries and cream, and I went for the tres leches cake.  When ordering, I had them just pack up my dessert to go–two margaritas in, I knew there wasn’t going to be room!

I apologize that I don’t have a picture of the margaritas!  I will work on that and get back to you.  Definitely 5 out of 5 chips (read: stars).  Would go again, and definitely a place to bring the parents or someone you want to stuff full to the brim with yummy food and alcoholic drinks!
